This passage from an interview conducted by Chuck Klosterman of Bill James who wrote a book called popular Crime gets lots of play:
As a society, overestimate us or underestimate the importance of the crime in everyday life?
Underestimated us, because it is our intention to underestimate it. We only deal with it indirectly. We all do so many things to avoid being the victims of crime that we see these things, so that we do not see the cost of it. Just find a safe place for us to have this conversation, for example-, we need a quiet place, but before that, we had to find a safe place. A hotel lobby, this is what it is because of the level of security. I checked this hotel, but I'm still sitting here in the Hall on the third floor, because it is safe. When you buy something, it is wrapped in seven layers of packaging to make it more difficult to fly.
Is there research that analyzes the decrease in crime for each type of crime and, in addition, by the motivations for each type of crime?
Take the murder.? There are intimate murder, territorial gang murder, robbery/murder, murder of sex crimes, murder of the influence of alcohol, etc.
About the intimate murder, since where everyone knows that the husband, wife or a parent are the main immediate suspect in a murder.? Scott Peterson has contributed to strengthening this knowledge.
Murder gang and territorial: not only are there more police officers on the street, but focus seems to have reallocated towards specialized working groups dealing with gangs and drugs.? It is therefore not just a matter of having in general but highly qualified law enforcement cops targeting specific groups who commit many of these crimes.
Drug-related murder: link to the murder of gang, it appears that fewer people are drugs today than in the past, on a per capita basis.? Meth was picked up in the rural areas and suburbs in the late 1990s and early 00′s, but which quickly dissipated, I think.
Murder of flight: companies have taken measures to protect money drops store clerks, cameras video and better communication with the police.? This is very important in the fight to the level of murder that many murders occur as a by-product of robbery.? Also, the public is more aware of the abuse and have taken steps to deal with that.? They carry guns or mace or they move in groups.
Murder of sex crime: forensics and DNA have certainly cut the impact of these types of murder.? This type of murder falls together with the fall in the incidence of rape forced (rape stranger, random rape, violent rape "gun to your head" vs. the rape).
And finally, alcohol influenced murder: bars and nightclubs often have hot spots for violent behaviour.? Certainly that they are yet, but the companies have adopted measures to restrict that.? Clubs to enforce dress codes and use metal detectors and the bouncers at the location of the police.
What this shows is that, in order to reduce the incidence of murder, we use the technology we are ever aware of our environment or we need police surveillance in order to achieve a relatively low murder.? Officials and political experts are defends the crime decrease, and this is certainly a good thing.? But it is not really organic change so much as something that has been manufactured.? Many resources were spent to reduce the incidence of crime.? Money, precious time, energy and Government resources were squandered on the criminal elements of our society.
